The latest vision for a new Oldham Coliseum and Heritage Centre is unveiled today ahead of the submission of a planning application. Mecanoo has been working together with the Oldham Council, Oldham Coliseum Theatre and a shadow project board on plans for this exciting new development on Union Street in Oldham, UK.
The image shows the proposed front elevation of the modern new-build Coliseum Theatre and how it would look alongside the Grade II-listed former Oldham Library and Art Gallery building, which will become a new Heritage Centre.
The scheme will bring the borough’s cultural jewels together at one integrated and interconnected town centre site. The development, just yards from the Oldham Central Metrolink stop, would also seamlessly link up with the adjacent Gallery Oldham, Library and Lifelong Learning centre.
When complete it would provide two theatre auditoria of 550 and 100 seats with state-of-the-art facilities, a heritage centre telling the story of Oldham's proud past, galleries, archives, public research rooms, foyers, bars and meeting spaces. Submission of the planning application this week is the crucial next step to meet funding requirements. Subject to confirmation of successful funding bids and planning permission, the construction is due to start on-site in 2016.
