As the construction of the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts is nearing its completion, Francine Houben has travelled to Taiwan to explain the ideas behind the iconic new mega-theatre complex during a symposium organised by the Architecture Association Kaohsiung on Monday 23rd March.
The National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts, to be opened in the second half on 2016, will be the centrepiece of the 9.9 hectares Wei-Wu-Ying Metropolitan Park. The existing centuries-old banyan trees in the park have been an important source of inspiration for Mecanoo’s building design.
Inspired by the trees iconic crowns, the vast, undulating structure is composed of a skin and roof, and connects an extensive range of functions. Banyan Plaza, the sheltered public space underneath this roof is where residents can wander through day and night, practice Tai Chi or watch stage street performances along.
Wan Jen Lin and Ching Mou Hou of Mecanoo’s Taiwan office will also speak at the symposium in the Museum of Fine Arts, Kaohsiung.
