The Bruce C. Bolling Municipal Building in Boston, MA has been awarded the 2015 BAC Craft Award for Most Innovative Use of Masonry. The building’s beautiful facades are built in warm brown bricks in a variety of different masonry techniques, creating rhythmic reliefs which provide intricate, playful shadows.
Since 1986, the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsworkers (BAC) has sponsored the BAC Craft Awards to recognise excellence in masonry.
BAC president James Boland said: "Projects of this calibre would not be possible without the close collaboration between design professionals such as [Mecanoo] and skilled union masonry craftworkers and the contractors that employ them."
In 2014, we produced a fascinating short documentary film that explores the complex brickwork in the Bruce C. Bolling Municipal Building. The film features interviews with everyone involved in the project - from construction workers to architects - and focuses on the difficulty of using brick in this elaborate manner.
