The first exhibition in the Netherlands devoted to German photographer Peter Lindbergh will open on September 10th 2016 at the Kunsthal Rotterdam. Mecanoo created the design for the travelling exhibition.
Peter Lindbergh is today regarded as one of the most influential fashion photographers of the past forty years. His pure black-and-white photographs have determined the course of fashion photography since the 1980s. The large-scale retrospective of Lindbergh’s multi-faceted oeuvre will feature more than 220 photographs including exclusive material varying from personal notes, storyboards, props, polaroids, contact sheets and films to monumental prints.
According to guest curator Thierry-Maxime Loriot, “[the] exhibition is not a chronological survey, but a narrative in which you discover the universe of Peter Lindbergh through his unique eye.”
The exhibition is presented in a thematic approach, marking Lindbergh’s creative development and focusing on his themes, imaginary world, and passions through the years. Mecanoo designed nine different sections, each with their own identity, yet all responding to the aesthetic of Lindbergh’s work. The experience of the black-and-white photography is enhanced through a clever play of light and darkness.
The exhibition is initiated, produced and toured by Kunsthal Rotterdam and will travel to prestigious museums around the world in the future.
