Francine Houben in Munich to talk about the Library of Birmingham
22.02.2017 - Events
The Munich Public Library has invited a range of influential speakers, including Mecanoo’s creative director Francine Houben, for their symposium “Public! The City and its Libraries” on February 23 and 24, 2017.
With more people than ever living in cities, more migration, and increasing importance of strong communities, libraries have experienced a renaissance. Spectacular new library buildings such as those in Birmingham, Aarhus or Stuttgart, are important public spaces for learning, for people to come together, and for exchanging knowledge.
The symposium offers different perspectives on the library in the 21st century. What will libraries of the future look like? What cultural and social programmes should libraries offer their patrons? How can libraries work together to innovate and share knowledge? Moreover, to what extent do public libraries influence the surrounding urban environment? By challenging the citizens of Munich to engage in discussions on a range of topics, they help shape the future of the Munich Public Library.
Other speakers include Eoun Young Yi (Yi Architects), Patrick Lüth (Snøhetta), Val Birchall (Library of Birmingham), Rob Bruijnzeels (Ministry of Imagination), Max Wagner (Gasteig München), and Dr. Johan Schloemann (Süddeutsche Zeitung).
