The municipality of Amsterdam has awarded the tender for the very last high-rise building plot at Overhoeks to the Xior team, consisting of DubbeLL neighbourhood developers, Mecanoo, Merosch, Dakdokters, Pim Evers, WeDriveSolar, Van Rossum and Nelissen Ingenieurs.
The Brink Tower will be a real eye-catcher with 28 floors (approx. 90 meters high) and will, after completion (expected in 2026), accommodate approximately 400 new residents. This new tower, situated in a prime location (near the Film Museum Eye and the "IJ") and easily accessible from Central Station via the ferry service, forms the connection between the Van der Pek neighbourhood and Overhoeks.
The Brink Tower will soon become a green, sustainable and vibrant vertical neighbourhood, with a great diversity of homes that will accommodate a diverse group of people who will be able to live, work, study, do business and relax in a pleasant way. And all this in a green and healthy environment.
The plans of the project consist of approximately 400 homes, including 120 social rental homes (among the social rental limit), 30 care homes, a meeting space for the neighbourhood and more than 250 rental properties in the middle segment. The plan offers a solution to the dire shortage of high-quality housing for young professionals, starters, young couples, (international) students and researchers in Amsterdam.
In addition to the investments in social quality and the health of future residents of BrinkTower, the technical concept of this high-rise building itself is also extremely sustainable. An EPC score of less than 0 is achieved through the combination of numerous PV cells on the various roofs, terraces and facades and the realization of additional sustainability facilities. In addition, the various terraces and roofs are equipped with so-called polder roofs, which means that water storage can take place and green enclaves can be created. The collected rainwater is reused during the growing season to water these roof gardens. Furthermore, efforts are also being made to achieve sustainable mobility by providing electric shared cars and bicycles.
The team will further develop the plan in order to start construction around the summer of 2022 (after obtaining the necessary permits), aiming for completion in 2024-2025 (but no later than 2026).
Plans for the project received the highest rating from the jury for the spatial/architectural quality, the contribution to the composition of the Overhoeks skyline and the programmatic interpretation. The assessment committee was particularly pleased with the way the building connects the two neigbourhoods “Overhoeks and the Van der Pek, with the design responding to the architecture of both neighbourhoods. From a greater distance, the tower has a distinct silhouette of its own, but it also fits in with the rhythm of the other towers. The jury was also pleased with the use of materials, since brick is an unused material in the Strip”.
Francine Houben/Arne Lijbers - Mecanoo “We noticed that there was a lack of integration between the Van der Pek neighbourhood and Overhoeks. The BrinkTower has a connecting quality, not only visually, but at every level, both indoors and outdoors. The elegant BrinkTower creates a transition between these two neighbourhoods by gradually reducing from Overhoeks, using traditional materials and architecture that seamlessly match the small scale and romance of the Van der Pek neighbourhood. BrinkTower will become a real green tower, both through the green areas around it that function as a communal neighbourhood garden and through the collective roof gardens for the residents”.
