On September 19th, the contractors for the both the underground train station and station hall completed their work and handed over ownership to ProRail and NS. ProRail will now start testing the new station and train tunnel and the NS will begin outfitting the retail units in the station hall itself.
The first part of the Mecanoo designed station hall and municipal building of Delft is set to open during the second quarter of 2015. Work on the second part, which will be built on the site of the current train viaduct, will begin once the new tunnel is fully operational.
Now that the hall is finished, the stunning visual effect of the new station’s showpiece - the huge vaulted ceiling which shows an old map of Delft - has become evident. In combination with the soft sculpturally shaped walls and ceiling decorated with ceramic pieces in different shades of blue, coupled with well-placed lighting, the station looks like no other in the Netherlands. Citizens of Delft and visitors to the city will be able to experience the ceiling and the rest of the new station a few months from now.
